When embryo grows for 5 days after fertilization ,it is called a blastocyst. The implantation and pregnancy rates are better with blastocyst transfer as only good and healthy embryos survive till day 5. Moreover, it coincides with day of implantation in natural pregnancy. It also eliminates the risk of multiple pregnancy as only single embryo transfer can be done. However, there are high cancellation rates with blastocyst transfer as all healthy looking embryos might not survive till day 5. If there are 5 grade 1 embryos on day 3 than it is recommended to go in for blastocyst culture. Blastocyst transfer is recommended for patients with recurrent implantation failure and in women with advanced maternal age.
