What is Surgical Sperm Retrieval?

These procedures are used in Azoospermic males for retrieving sperms, when the release of sperms is prevented by either in cases of testicular failure , vasectomy or obstruction of vas deferens. We do Surgical Sperm Retrieval by various techniques:

  • PESA (Percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration): This is a simple procedure done under local anesthesia, where sperms are aspirated with a needle from the epididymis.

  • TESA (Testicular sperm aspiration): Sperms are aspirated with a needle directly from the testicle, under local anesthesia.

  • TESE (Testicular sperm extraction): Testicular Sperm Extraction This involves giving a small incision and taking a small tissue from inside the testicle. However, TESE would generally be required only in cases where the testicle has very low sperm production.

  • Microdissection TESE: A micro dissecting microscope is used to pinpoint the tissue with maximum sperm production, the same is removed. This increases the chances of sperm retrieval, less tissue damage of the testicle, and therefore fewer after effects such as less blood loss and less pain.
